WATER MANAGEMENT IN CBC

For a brief introduction of water Management in CBC, in 1980 PDOCHS became PDOHA and the CBC came into existence. In 1984 the water supply was handed over to CBC. In 1985 control was again taken –over by DHA. In 2009 water supply was again handed over to CBC.

CBC has adopted per capita demand as 30 GPD in calculating / supplying the water to the public. KW&SB (Karachi Water & Sewerage Board) provides water for CBC at the following location:

• Ghazi pumping station (Chakra Goth)
• Zamzama

As the Chakra Goth is almost 8 Km away from the main pumping station of CBC thus 2 x Water Supply lines having diameter 30” and 24” have been laid to transport water towards the said pumping station. Thereafter the water is pumped to different pumping stations through distribution lines having diameters 12”, 16” & 18” for further supply to the individual units.

The main issues currently being faced by CBC in respect of Water Management are:

• Gap in Demand & Supply
• Obsolete / Corroded Water Supply network
• Losses in water supply System
• Improvement in Management

STORAGE CAPACITY (MG)

In order to redress the issues a strategic plan has been devised which includes short term, medium term and long term measures. SHORT TERM MEASUERS (30TH JUNE, 2011) Replacement of AC lines in phase-IV, V & V (ext) as well as bulk transmission lines will be done Reverse Osmosis Plant of capacity 0.2 MGD will be installed. To ensure uniform supply of water to the consumers a mobile vigilance squad in collaboration with resident committees will be established

Replacement Plan

• 1 -Almost 70% of entire Water Supply network of CBC consists of hazardous AC lines.
• 2 -Most of these lines have been worn out and cause severe water losses.
• 3 -Replacement of these deteriorated lines is imperative in order to achieve the following:
• • 1 -To minimize water losses in the system due to leakages.
  • 2 -To prevent contamination.
  • 3 -To maintain smooth / uniform flow.4 -To reduce bowzer load due to lines faults.
  • 4 -To reduce bowzer load due to lines faults.

MEDIUM TERM MEASURES
(30TH JUNE, 2012)

• 2ND Phase of replacement of corroded lines will b implemented.
• Another RO Plant of appropriate capacity will be installed.
• DHA will probably be able to re-commission the Cogent plant.

LONG TERM MEASURES
(30. JUNE, 2013)

• 3RD (FINAL) Phase of replacement of lines will be implemented.
• RO Plant will further be added to augment the in take.
• DHA management will incessantly be approached to install Cogent - II.
• Enhancement of storage capacity.

LATEST DEVELOPMENT BY KW & SB (Karachi Water & Sewerage Board )

• KW & SB PROVIDES WATER AT Chakra through 2X.
• Transmission lines having dia 24'' & 12''
• Recently KW & SB has replaced 12'' dia line having length 60' by 16''dia.
• Such an increase of 4'' diameter will probably increase 1 MGD water.

After implementation of the strategic plan following improvements in water supply management Will be achieved:

• Water Losses will be considerably reduced and will save almost 1 MGD (approx) water.
• The gradual addition of RO Plants will supplement the intake.
• The monitoring of lowest tier of managerial staff will improve the distribution system as well as deter the staff extending illegal connection to the units.
• Re- functioning of Cogen plant will have a great relief to the public and management.
• Public complaints will be reduced considerably.
